| 4/5/08 According to the ER yesterday, the problem could have been caused by the 2 doses of antibiotics Nathan was on over the past 3 weeks. The antibiotics were for an ear infection which did not go away with the first dose. A second dose of Zithromax was prescribed, take 1 pill for 3 days, off for 3 days and then take 1 pill for 3 days. He finished his last dose on Sunday. For all of us, when we take antibiotics the "good" bacteria that we all have in our intestines, bowel, etc. is killed off as well as the bad bacteria. This bacteria then has to grow back. For some, this regrowth may be painful and cause abdominal pain. The other scenario is it could be the beginning of appendicitis. We are to watch for fever, vomiting, etc. and if Nathan has any of this call the doctor or ER right away and probably have to take him in once again. The gall bladder was pretty much ruled out at the ER. The ER doc said she had never diagnosed a young, male, under weight child with gall bladder problems. Nathan went back to his regular pediatricians office today for a recheck. By the time of the visit Nathan was pretty much back to normal as well as bouncing off the walls because dad forgot to give him his ADHD pill this morning - thanks Dad! lol We are to still keep an eye on him but the doc thinks the worst has passed - yippeeee! Nathan is now allowed to have his beloved pizza - and just in time for us to go to Doug and Erica's for our bi-weekly card night and pizza on Saturday! 4/4/08 Nathan has a troubling illness. His upper right abdomen has been hurting since Tuesday evening. We originally started treating him with Tylenol and lot's of fluid. On Wednesday he was not able to attend school so we called and scheduled a doctors visit. Wendy took him to the Dr. in the afternoon and the Dr. ordered some blood tests and abdominal X-rays. Wendy was able to get the blood work done, but it seems that the Children's Hospital urgent care had some communication issues and after 1 1/2 hours of waiting she was not able to get the x-rays done so she left. The Dr. called Wednesday evening at 10 pm and said that the blood work came back normal and told us to take him to Children's Hospital emergency room in the morning for a Cat scan and more blood work. We arrived at Children's around 9 am on Thursday and the Dr. informed us that they could do an ultra sound and it would detect any abnormalities without any exposure to radiation. The ultra sound showed no problems with his appendix or other areas, and the second round of blood work was also normal. After a discussion with the Dr. it was determined that we would just monitor his condition, and he would be restricted to a "bland" diet for a few days (sorry Nathan no pizza for you). He may have some type of virus which will pass. We are still concerned about the level of pain, and the fact that the pain is so localized. He is scheduled for another Dr. appointment today at 2:00 pm. Perhaps another round of tests is in order. Poor guy..! I hate to see a child in pain especially when there is nothing I can do to help. Updates will be posted later. |
