Well we were supposed to travel North to Mosquito Lake for the 4th of July. We thought it would be fun to camp in a distant campground for a change rather than locally. Unfortunately the gas prices did not cooperate and Bertha was forced to do a much shorter local drive.
Alum Creek was the chosen campground and F6 was the site,
you can see it below. The weather reports were crappy but we still wanted to go. It was cold. It was rainy, boy was it rainy. Thursday, Friday, Saturday it rained off and on. Sunday it cleared for a bit then again on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday it rained some more. Thursday July 3rd it started to taper off with only a few isolated showers. July 4th came and it started to get beautiful.
We spent most of the week sitting outdoors, and playing games with the kids. Evenings were spent doing some small shopping trips for snacks. We did eat out a couple of nights just to get out of the rain and to avoid trying to cook in the rain. We were still having fun but it was not the same as being able to hop on your bike and ride around or go for a starry walk. July 3rd was the day it started to feel more like a camping trip. It was the day of Red White & Boom (Midwest largest fireworks display) in downtown Columbus. We spent the evening in the campsite playing catch and then in the evening we hooked up our projector and watched the fireworks on our big screen (6’x4’ the side of the RV ). The 4th of July was just relaxing and a bit exciting. We noticed a Channel 10 news van driving around at diner time and the kids went and followed it. They kept coming back with reports that they were shooting footage and talking to people. We didn’t think that much of it until they pulled up in front of our campsite. They asked us some questions then put us on the spot asking if we would be interviewed on camera for the 11pm news story they were running about camping. I immediately turned them down, but Wendy did the interview and it went well. They stayed a few extra minutes shooting some footage of me cooking spaghetti, the kids playing and Tiffany reading. All in all it wasn’t that bad. We played some more cooked some more and believe it or not the kids did not want to go see the local fireworks so we just sat around the fire and watched a movie. Then the news came on and we watched our 5 minutes of fame. It’s amazing that they can take 15 minutes worth of talking and film and strip it down to a few minutes of “flash backs”. We have a DVD recording of it so I will work on getting the video posted soon. The weekend went with out a hitch and weather continued to improve. All in all it was a great camping trip. Next time I hope I can take more time off work.
